Hi,

I was hoping you could answer a question regarding the BSM-2 , on the Simrad webpage it states that the BSM-2 has independent transceivers that can transmit at the same time , whilst looking on some other forums people are saying that the BSM-2 cannot display HF and LF Chirp at the same time like traditional tone bust sounders can, before making a purchase i would like to find out if i can have a split screen on an NSS or NSE which shows me HF and LF Chirp at the same time.

The Transducer im looking at will be a TM265LH which has both HF and LF ceramics.

Cheers

Hi,

Steve from Simrad checked this one out for us - his response is below.

"I have just tested this possibilities here on my NSE unit and you can run both High and low frequencies in split screen chirp mode, also interestingly you can mix this with 50 or 200khz. I have attached some screenshots.

13 shows mixed chirp

14 shows mixed chirp and 50Khz"

The Simrad NSE, NSS and NSO series will all do this. The screenshots are below, click on the attachments to view them in full size.

All the best,

Hi Ben Happy New year Firstly thanks alot for prompt reply you must be the first person that has got straight back to me with an answer for on a Simrad product, well that has proven one of the big hang ups ive had with the product it also looks like you have independent control over range and colour scale for HF and LF in split mode. The Combination im am looking at is a NSE 12 an NSS 12 with BSM-2 ,from what i have seen the NSS does not have Simnet capabilities , so is there any issues in linking the two together? and im gathering that the BSM-2 can be displayed on either unit or at the same time on both hopefully? as i do a bit of rough water fishing i did not want to go both touchscreens ,but is this a good combo or should i go for the same units? Could you confirm what Cartography the NSE and NSS comes with now i heard a rumour that New NSEs will only have silver and not platinum? Lastly the other Electronics package im looking at is from Garmin, there new 6000 and 7000 series MFD’s plus there new GSD-26 Chirp module, so far the screen shots that are on there website a far more impressive as far as target separation goes over the BSM-2 ones ive seen so far. As i do a lot offshore fishing the Chirp module is really what im after so i was hoping you could get a hold of a few more screen shots of the BSM-2 in action to help me make my decision then we can discuss the finer details of the package and price. Cheers Simon

Hi Simon and all,

We are aware that some competitors use filtering to eliminate surface clutter. In the attached screenshots, we have chosen not to do this, to maintain maximum performance. We don't want to filter out any proper echoes near the surface!

With the BSM-2, you can set surface clutter filtering to off, low, medium and high.

The NSS Sport touchscreen MFD's have NMEA2000 (Micro-C connector). This is fully compatible with Simnet, so the best way to integrate into your Simrad network is to use a Simnet to Micro-C cable on the NSS, and go into your Simnet multi-joiner. So yes, you can run the NSS and NSE together, and use either or both with the BSM-2. Don't forget the Ethernet connection too - this is for the high-bandwidth data such as the BSM-2 "pictures".

You are right that the NSE now comes pre-loaded with Navionics Silver charting for all of Australia, but it is cheaper than when it had Platinum, to reflect this change. Keep reading for the review, scroll to the bottom and click on the links for the screenshots!

All the best,

Ben

"In an effort to re-visit our meeting yesterday and discuss the NSO system in my boat , I must say wow.! The screen shots I was able to capture on my trip to the Bahamas in my opinion have set the bar. This technology has provided me a way to mark the bottom in a way that has never been seen before.I am able to develop deep water fishing spots at high speed and also visit existing spots and see whether there are fish there or not . This has changed the way we fish forever. This also allows us to maximize our effectiveness and reap the most bounty on a days trip. Remember when deep dopping you will make a 1-2 hour committment on a spot in order to fish it , and when there are no fish there it is time wasted. The BSM2 box also allows us to pin-point where the fish are in relation to the structure . I spent 3 days last month deep dropping in water from 1100 ft to 1875 ft . Each day we averaged 4-500 lbs of extremely high quality bottom fish with very few attempts at dropping without fish .

The more impressive part of the story is the structure we marked on the way over and back.We were traveling across the gulfstream in some of the deepest parts of this ocean 2450 - 2600 ft of water and marking bottom at speed. While running I was adjusting the equiptment at all times to see what was down there. We stumbled across a very deep mountain range with hills as high as 250 ft and some as high as 100 ft. The amazing part of this was the heavy fish and life we marked on it at a modest setting of 4x zoom.(again ) at 20 knots. These screen shots I was able to capture may represent a new fisherie for me and I am planning a trip back with the right tackle to see what lives there.I can tell you, I relayed this info to some top guys in the industry and after overcoming their dis-belief they all agree , whatever is living there has never been fished and it will be big.

As I  have learned the ins and outs of this equiptment I have logged hundreds of new fishing spots and can tell you I have discovered some great new spots never before fished with great success. I still feel the scroll speed at deep setting w zoom needs some adjustment and a few more small adjustments as well , however without touching it at all It is the most amazing product on the market.

On my boat we spend most of our time in water 900 to 1700 ft an fish on or near the bottom. We have seen bait , fish from grouper/snapper all the way to large swordfish on this equiptment and have perfected our game thanks to the BSM/airmar ducer install.

In my opinion Fisherman who enjoy bottom fishing cant afford not to install this on their boat as it maximizes the production of a day at sea.The highest cost in a days fishing and /or a bahama trip is fuel. We surely capitalised on our trip and saved time thanks to this electronics package .The chart quality matched with the BSM2 makes us deadly. I can tell you as we cleaned our catch each day we had crowds of people at the cleaning table . Our biggest catch was a pair of Mystic Groupers on one drop, one was 45lbs the other 77 lbs. Thanks to my new favorite spot called try it now ...........................found at 20 knots running in ."
