Hi Frank and all,

The below includes an extract from our latest marine electronics newsletter, plus some specific tips to answer your question.

The NSS7 and NSS8 have a built-in broadband sounder, which is almost identical to Simrad's revolutionary BSM-1.
The broadband sounder will perform to depths up to about 1,000 metres. You will need a 50/200kHz transducer or an 83/200kHz transducer. The 83kHz frequency is used for mid-shallower waters, the 50kHz for deep waters. The 200kHz is for shallow waters and/or high speeds, and is available on both transducers.

A standard 600W transducer will work well, however you may further increase your performace by using a 1kW transducer. This has a bigger element, which means a better pickup of echo returns, thus a better picture. Both these transducers are available in through-hull in various materials or transom-mount versions.

What transducer and frequency you prefer is personal preference, however we generally recommend the 83/200kHz versions unless you are going offshore in excess of 100m.

If you have a smaller boat, a transom-mount transducer may be appropriate, otherwise a through-hull would be the better option.
